Man City were comprehensively beaten 3-1 by Hamburg in Germany. Although Stephen Ireland gave City the lead in the 1st minute, Hamburg recovered from that initial setback and constantly bombarded City’s goal. Had it not been for Shay Given, the margin of victory for Hamburg could have been much higher.
City were beaten 3-1 by Fulham on Sunday. Their defence had another bad day at the office, and the fans booed the side at the final whistle. The second leg is expected to come too fast for the injured trio of Wayne Bridge, Vincent Kompany and Craig Bellamy.
Werder Bremen could knock out Italy’s last surviving team in European competition this Thursday when they face Udinese at Stadio Friuli. Udinese’s hopes at the Weserstadion seemed dead and buried when Bremen lead 3-0, but Fabio Quaglirella’s late goal gave the Friulian side some hope ahead of the second leg. Pasquale Marino’s side failed to take advantages of the chances that came their way, while Werder were ruthless in front of goal.
A late brace from Antonio Floro Flores saw Udinese beat nine man Reggina 2-0 in the Serie A on Sunday. Defender Maurizio Domizzi also missed a penalty for Udinese early in the second half, but it did not prove costly for the Bianconeri in the end. Reggina self destructed - they not only had two men sent off, but also failed to convert from the spot minutes before Flores scored his first goal.

Marseille were outclassed in the first leg in Donetsk, but coach Eric Gerets remains optimistic that his side can beat Shakhtar at home. Gerets chose to leave both Mathieu Valbuena and Hatem Ben Arfa on the bench in Donetsk, and his side were unable to get the crucial away goal they needed ahead of the second leg.
On the domestic front, Marseille overtook leaders Lyon. Marseille drubbed Grenoble 4-1 at home, while Lyon could only draw against Monaco. All five goals came in the second half. Nigerian defender Taye Taiwo scored a brace, with Hilton and Brandao also getting on the scoresheet. Laurent Courtois pulled one back for Grenoble with a late strike.
