Marseille were outclassed in the first leg in Donetsk, but coach Eric Gerets remains optimistic that his side can beat Shakhtar at home. Gerets chose to leave both Mathieu Valbuena and Hatem Ben Arfa on the bench in Donetsk, and his side were unable to get the crucial away goal they needed ahead of the second leg.
On the domestic front, Marseille overtook leaders Lyon. Marseille drubbed Grenoble 4-1 at home, while Lyon could only draw against Monaco. All five goals came in the second half. Nigerian defender Taye Taiwo scored a brace, with Hilton and Brandao also getting on the scoresheet. Laurent Courtois pulled one back for Grenoble with a late strike.
